Smoothies can sometimes be a great hiding place for added sugar and extra calories, so I always make my own. The smoothies I made tended to be ordinary and generic until I discovered dragon fruit. This hot pink fruit was not only packed with nutrition, but was also visually appealing. I experimented with the fruit for months and was able to formulate a smoothie that was delicious, packed with nutrition, and had zero added sugar.
While dragon fruit can be tough to find in the grocery store, you can order it directly from PitayaPlus. Since I drink one of these almost every day, I order several bags at a time to save money. It is actually cheaper than purchasing in the store if you order in bulk directly from the manufacturer. The other key ingredient is So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt Alternative. This can be found in most grocery stores, even Publix. The key is to make sure to purchase the unsweetened variety. My preference is the unsweetened vanilla flavor, but plain works just as well.
One of the secrets to keeping this smoothie both healthy and delicious is using fruit that is ripe and using a little honey if you have a sweet tooth. Protein powders and other vitamin mixes may also be added for an extra nutritional punch. I love the vivid hue of this smoothie and am convinced it gives me a little boost. Never underestimate the power of a pink smoothie.
