While gluten is known to be an allergen among people, it wasn’t as obvious that pets may have a gluten sensitivity, too. After years of trial and error, I have discovered a gluten-free cat food that has worked wonders on my feline friends. I did a ton of research and happened upon an article on the same mission. I found the article to be both credible and highly informative and selected one of the brands from the top ten list to feed both my cats.
I was smitten when I adopted my first cat. Snowflake was a white fluffy bundle of cuddles. She seemed content and happy when I brought her home and I thought she would be easy to manage. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Snowflake began to have stomach issues almost immediately. Many days there would be poo paw prints all over the white tile from her bathroom issues and other times hairballs and cat puke were plentiful. I took Snowflake to the vet and she prescribed prescription cat food. Most of her issues subsided, but the cost was sky high.
After a couple of years on the prescription diet, I couldn’t afford it anymore. By this point I had adopted a second cat and she ate the same food as Snowflake. I switched them both to Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Stomach. The new food seemed to be okay for quite some time, but Snowflake’s stomach started to act up again.
I started researching natural cat foods and found out Hill’s had a grain free natural line. A representative from Hill’s explained to me that their regular line of cat food was premium and the natural line did not consist of premium ingredients. A little baffled by all of this, I went ahead and purchased the natural grain free line. Snowflake began to lose weight and she started to lose some of her fur; however, the stomach issues were no longer present. I began searching for a highly rated grain free all natural food and decided to try Blackwood Chicken Meal and Field Pea Recipe Grain Free Dry Cat Food.
At first both my cats turned their spoiled noses up to the new food, but after they realized it’s that or nothing, they acquired a taste for it. Snowflake’s fur grew back, her coat was healthier than ever, and she returned to a healthy weight. In fact, she hasn’t had a single stomach issue since she began consuming the new food months ago.
It seems pet owners are more aware of their fury friends’ diets than they were just a year ago. It’s important to realize the health benefits of a gluten-free diet can be realized by more than only people. It’s amazing what a healthy diet can do for your pets.
